EMTT and tPEMF

Magnetic therapy

Nothing touches your dog, and nothing about it hurts. A magnetic field passes through the area being treated and reaches bone, tendon, muscle, nerve and ligament injuries that are hard to get at any other way. It is evidence based, non-invasive, and most dogs lie still right through it.

What it is, in plain terms

A ring or applicator is positioned over the area being treated and generates a magnetic field that passes through it. Nothing touches your dog, nothing is clipped, and there is no sensation to speak of.

Magnetic therapy offers treatment for musculoskeletal problems, including bone, tendon, muscle, nerve and ligament injuries. Targeted pulsed electromagnetic field therapy is evidence based and non-invasive.

It is the least dramatic thing in the building and one of the easiest for an anxious dog to accept.

The two kinds, and why both exist

  • EMTT, extracorporeal magnetotransduction therapy. A high-energy field that reaches deeper structures. Often used alongside shockwave on the same area, because the two work differently.
  • tPEMF, targeted pulsed electromagnetic field therapy. Lower energy, longer sessions, and gentle enough to use frequently. Evidence based and non-invasive.

Which one gets used depends on what is being treated and how deep it sits. That is a judgment made at the evaluation rather than a choice you need to make.

Where it helps

  • Bone, tendon, muscle, nerve and ligament injuries
  • Areas too sore to touch, where hands-on work would not be tolerated yet
  • Deep structures that are hard to reach any other way
  • Dogs who find other treatments stressful
  • Post-operative sites, with your surgeon’s agreement

Because nothing makes contact, it is often the first thing used on a dog who is guarding an area, with hands-on work introduced once they are more comfortable.

What a session looks like

Your dog lies on a bed or mat with the applicator positioned over the area. Most lie still through it; some fall asleep. There is no clipping, no gel and no restraint beyond a hand resting on them.

It is almost always one part of a session rather than the whole of it.

Questions

Questions we get asked

Can my dog feel magnetic therapy?

Very little, if anything. Nothing touches your dog and there is no heat or vibration to speak of. Most dogs lie still through it and a good number fall asleep.

What is the difference between EMTT and tPEMF?

EMTT is a higher-energy field that reaches deeper structures and is often used alongside shockwave on the same area. tPEMF is lower energy with longer sessions, gentle enough to use frequently. Which one is used depends on what is being treated and how deep it sits.

What does magnetic therapy treat?

Musculoskeletal problems including bone, tendon, muscle, nerve and ligament injuries. It is particularly useful for areas too sore to touch, for deep structures that are hard to reach otherwise, and for dogs who find other treatments stressful.

Does my dog need to be clipped or sedated?

Neither. There is no clipping, no gel and no sedation, the field passes through hair and skin without contact.
