Braces, Carts, and Orthotic Devices 4 Pets

Pet limb orthotics and mobility carts (wheelchairs) provide critical support for dogs and cats with limb weakness, injury, or paralysis. These custom devices – such as rear-end carts for pets who cannot use hind legs – consist of a frame with wheels and harnesses that support the animal’s body, allowing it to walk using unaffected limbs.

Similarly, orthotic braces (for joints like knees, hocks, elbows, or carpi) stabilize injuries and correct alignment. For example, knee braces can support a cruciate‐injured stifle, and carpal braces can off-load arthritic wrists.

All devices are tailored to the pet’s size and condition (via measurements or molds) for a precise fit. Properly fitted braces or carts can significantly enhance a pet’s quality of life by reducing pain, preventing further injury, and enabling continued exercise.

  • Common uses: Hindlimb paralysis or weakness (wheelchairs), joint deformities and arthritis (braces/orthotics), injured ligaments or amputations (custom supports).
  • How it works: By mechanically supporting weak or injured limbs, these devices restore stability. Wheelchairs transfer weight from hind to front limbs, while braces limit abnormal joint movement. Over time this offloads stress, helps muscles strengthen, and can slow degenerative changes.
  • Results: Pets fitted with assistive devices often regain mobility, play more freely, and show less discomfort. For example, a dog with hip dysplasia may walk with less lameness using a supportive harness, and an arthritic cat might jump more easily with a hock brace in place.

The fitting process involves a thorough exam (often with imaging) and custom fabrication to ensure comfort. After fitting, our team educates owners on gradual acclimation. In practice, we see dogs and cats quickly adapt and engage in rehab activities using their braces or carts.
